Garmin likes to name their features things like: Virtual Partner®, Virtual racer™, Courses, Auto Pause®, Auto Lap® and so on.

It is pretty easy to get a vague idea what the features do, but an in-depth description is definitely more useful.

This glossary defines the main 24 features Garmin HRM’s offer so that you can know how you will benefit.

Advanced Workouts Guidance

To create your own personal heart rate training routines. Pick your training zones, your goals and set your limits for a perfectly executed “personal trainer-like” workout.

Alarm Sounds When You Diverge From Preset Pace

Garmin calls it Pace alert and an alarm sounds when you go over or below your preset pace.

Altimeter and Temperature

These work together to give you height above sea level (Elevation traversed during workout). The monitor can store your trends and you can later upload to the internet and share or further examine. Knowing the incline and decline of the roads you cycled is key. The effort exerted on a 5km uphill is much different than 5km downhill.

Battery Life

All the above HRMs (Except for FR60) have a rechargeable lithium ion battery. The life of the charge varies per mode and per watch model. The range is 8 hours to 20 hours in training mode and 2 weeks to 4 weeks in power save mode.

Button Free Operation of Watch

Garmin calls it Auto Scroll and it allows for you to see different bits of data on the HRM screen during training. When AutoScroll is set ON the screen will toggle to views you want it to. It’s all custom and it’s pretty crucial for the serious heart rate trainers.

Calorie Expenditure Counter

It accurately counts your energy output during exercise in kCal. Some HRMs have a strictly heart rate based counter (Higher heart rate means higher rate of caloric burn) and some do not (Uses exercise times and other preset data like age and mass).

Compete With An Electronic Person

Garmin calls it Virtual Partner® and it gives you some extra motivation while training. The partner is digital (You preset the speed and activity) and the GPS is used to track you versus “him/her.”

Compete Against Other Sports

Garmin calls it Virtual racer™ and it allows you to compete against other activities. Maybe you’re running versus virtual biking etc. (via Virtual racer™).

Compete Against Yourself

Garmin calls it Courses and it allows you to race against your past (stored) bike tracks and running tracks. If your goal is for fitness improvement then this feature is crucial.

Custom Interval Training

Like a stopwatch. Garmin’s custom interval trainer allows you to set up your desired rest and exert times and the watch will auto alarm you when to go and when to stop.

Data Transfer to Computer

All the Garmin HRMs can store your training data. The reason you may want to store data is to further analyse it with Garmin web apps or software. Garmin HRMs have either Automatic/wireless or Manual data transfer capability. It’s on a per model basis.

Garmin Training Center® Software

To help track your progress. It is a computer based bit of software (not web based) and is a full fledged digital personal trainer. Check out the Garmin software here for the full run-down.

GPS

Global Positioning System capable devices can use satellites within the global navigation satellite system to get your location under all conditions.

Heart Rate Monitor

Senses you heart rate in beats per minute. Heart rate training is the only definitive way to scientifically improve your fitness (Perceived exertion is much different than actual physiological (max heart rate) exertion). With a heart rate monitor you get real-time data that gives you an exact window into your training effects and allows for custom built workouts to most efficiently increase your physical fitness.

Lap Recording Without You Doing Anything

Garmin calls it Auto Lap® and it simply starts a new lap without you doing anything except keep training.

Memory/Data Storage

Garmin HRMs can store laps, locations and routes. It stores these bits of data in a hard drive within its casing. The amount of laps, locations and routes that you can store depends, obviously, on the length of your laps, routes etc and is also dependant on which HRM you choose. If you plan to use Garmin Connect web application and plan to upload data to there frequently then you probably only need a weeks worth of data storage (150 laps and 2-3 routes).

Multi-sport To Ensure Monitor Knows What Activity You’re Doing

Ideal for the triathletes and Iron-men and women out there. The multi-sport feature allows for touch of the button activity switching – Fitness training, running, cycling, swimming etc. This is to ensure your HRM training tool is up to speed with your movement pattern. This is especially important for tracking distances in open-water versus on dry land.

Simple Workouts Guidance

Set your own goals. With simple workout guidance you are allowed to set up a custom time, distance and calories goal for each training session as you please.

Garmin calls a sport watch one that has dual time, date and alarms.

Training Effect

Do you love videos and are looking for exact instruction and training on how to heart rate train? Garmin has you covered with their Training Videos webpage (Check out the ‘Into Sports’ section to look at heart rate monitor specific videos).
